From Dreams to Reality!

October 19th, 2009 we started the first library day. Using the school lunchroom and only 2 boxes of books and materials, we set out to create a new resource in the village of Punta Banco. Soon we were given two used lap tops and were teaching computer fundamentals with the use of games. We have around 15-25 kids that are now coming.



The Library is open Mondays from 1-4, Wednesdays 1-4 and Saturday from 12-4. Every week we offer, coloring, drawing, reading books with our book club (free ice cream cone given as a reward), “picture dictionary” (cutting pictures from magazines and sticking them into a notebook and writing the words in Spanish and English next to it, thus creating their own personal dictionary) and “bingo”, which of course they love the most, because they can win prizes. The bingo-cards have pictures instead of numbers and by playing they learn the English words of the things shown in the pictures. Once in a while we offer something special. Once we showed a BBC documentary with a projector. We will continue to look for special things to share.

We need help! Being a volunteer is a very special thing. You get watch these children learn and grow. We have seen many beautiful changes take place in our first year. Three more children are reading now and it is so cool to sit next to them while they buzz through a story and then look up at you and smile. They are so proud and it shows.
